kate at orchard farm building

What makes Orchard Farm products different?  The ingredients are truly home grown!  Located in Moscow, Idaho this small acreage organic farm grows market veggies, herbal botanicals, a couple of kids, and a delightful line of all natural soaps.  I met Kate, the owner of Orchard Farm, at Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago.  She saw me struggling with getting my booth set up (Anthony missed his flight, my hand truck was no where to be found, my car was about 6 blocks away, I had boxes and boxes of product to get to my booth, it was raining, etc., etc.) and immediately offered assistance.  An instant friend!  It took me a couple of years to try her soaps, but when I did I loved them and knew my customers would as well.

Meet The Maker – Kate of Orchard Farm

Why did you start your company?

I first made soap while in school training as an herbalist. Our soap and salves were a natural addition to our busy farm life and provided a year round income. We have been in operation for over a decade now.

What do you do besides make products?

I live to be in the wilderness. It nourishes my soul. We raft as a family in the summers and spent our winters skiing. Running my own business has allowed us flexibility to get out and enjoy nature.

What do you think is the secret of your success?

The best success stories are always happy customers. I have such loyal customers that spread our products around the globe.

What is the most difficult part of your job?

The most difficult part of the last 12 years since we bought the farm is keeping up with demands of working from home. Finding balance and staying inspired always comes from time away from the farm and work. We are learning this is just as important as how much money we make. It is an endless climb running a business. We love to take in the view and marvel at how far we have come.

Favorite motto or quote?

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.

Made of the highest quality Organic, fair trade, and unrefined oils. These soaps contain fragrant blends of pure essential oils and 100% botanical infusions. We always have a bar in our shower.  My favorite being the Green Tea & Sea Salt bar.  Want to try a few bars for yourself?  Leave a comment here and you will be entered.  Winner will be chosen at random on Monday, January 19th.

Deanna Cruse:

I recently found an idea to make natural oil soaps. I enjoy making them as well as using them. I am promoting my product by having a booth at a flea market and sell them personally by sharing them with those I know and are related to. The ones who buy them, come to find out they love them. And I also nake lip balm out of fresh bees wax with scented aromas. Thise sell good in winter. I enjoy and pray this project will grow and continue. I enjoy it.

If you have any ideas for my growth, I would love to read about them and apply any advice.

Thank you,

Deanna Cruse

I am having the same issue in Colorado Jackie. Having lived in Seattle most of my life my skin was not used to the Colorado weather. I’ve gotten a humidifier for the bedroom and spritz my during the day to help out as well.

Jackie Strader:

I’m originally from New Orleans, and moved here to Idaho after Hurricane Katrina. I was so used to humidity, my skin was never dry. Here, I have to use handmade soaps or I itch like the dickens! The fact that these are beautiful would make using them seem more like I was pampering myself than “having to.”
