Briar of Marble & Milkweed

Marble & Milkweed products are made by hand and with great love, in New York City.  Designed to simplify the way you care for yourself, all products are formulated almost exclusively using organic and fair-trade ingredients. They are gentle and contain no harsh chemicals or artificial scents.  We chose to sell these products at  Formulary 55 because they are simply packaged, and delicately, yet complexly scented.  Briar, the master maker's, past life as a pastry chef really shines through.  Our top selling item from her collection is the Cardamom Body Butter.  My favorite however is hands down the Bath Nectar.

Meet The Maker – Briar of Marble & Milkweed

What is a favorite product you make and why?

I love blending chai.  There is something so familiar and comforting to me about all of the spices, many of which have been favorites of mine since my days in the pastry kitchen.  I love being able to share many of those same flavors in the form of tea.

What do you do besides make products?

I was a pastry chef for many years before starting Marble & Milkweed, and I'm sometimes still involved in dessert-related projects.  I also garden intensively in a tiny plot in my community garden in the East Village.  When I'm not doing that, I'm snuggling my sweetheart and my kitten.

What do you think is the secret of your success?

I feel that the modest success that I've had has been mostly due to finding a good balance between being consistent and trying new things.  For me, Marble & Milkweed has always been a labor of love, and it's something that I want to continue to grow and evolve organically.  It's a long-term project, and I think that half of the battle is to just keep going.  Make mistakes, learn from them, and keep moving forward.

What is the favorite part of your job?

I really enjoy setting aside an afternoon for myself to create new products.  It's so easy to get caught up in all of the production that needs doing and all of the administrative work too.  Scheduling in time to innovate and to explore new ideas is crucial to keep my creativity fresh and strengthen my business.

Most rewarding?

I love when clients come by the studio, it's always so wonderful to meet the people who are drawn to my work and to find out more about them.  I've been fortunate enough to meet many kindred spirits through my work.
